Space observations of cold-cloud phase change.
This study examines the vertically resolved cloud measurements from the cloud-aerosol lidar with orthogonal polarization instrument on Aqua satellite from June 2006 through May 2007 to estimate the extent to which the mixed cloud-phase composition can vary according to the ambient temperature, an important concern for the uncertainty in calculating cloud radiative effects. At -20 degrees C, the...
متن کاملPhase space manipulation of cold free radical OH molecules.
We report bunching, slowing, and acceleration of a supersonically cooled beam of diatomic hydroxyl radicals (OH). In situ observation of laser-induced fluorescence along the beam propagation path allows for detailed characterization of longitudinal phase-space manipulation of OH molecules through the Stark effect by precisely sequenced inhomogeneous electric fields.
متن کاملThe Phase-Space Density Profiles of Cold Dark Matter Halos
We examine the coarse-grained phase-space density profiles of a set of recent, highresolution simulations of galaxy-sized Cold Dark Matter (CDM) halos. Over two and a half decades in radius the phase-space density closely follows a power-law, ρ/σ ∝ r−α, with α ≈ 1.875. This behaviour closely matches the self-similar solution obtained by Bertschinger for secondary infall of gas onto a point-mass...
متن کاملObservations of cold antihydrogen
ATRAP s eþ cooling of p in a nested Penning trap has led to reports of cold H produced during such cooling by the ATHENA and ATRAP collaborations. To observe H, ATHENA uses coincident annihilation detection and ATRAP uses field ionization followed by p storage. Advantages of ATRAP s field ionization method include the complete absence of any background events, and the first way to measure which...
متن کاملCloud Phase Determination Using Ground-Based AERI Observations at SHEBA
A new technique for ascertaining the thermodynamic cloud phase from high-spectral-resolution ground-based infrared measurements made by the Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer (AERI) is presented. This technique takes advantage of the differences in the index of refraction of ice and water between 11 and 19 mm. The differences in the refractive indices translate into differences in clou...
